Life as a college student during the winter brings its own unique set of challenges and opportunities. Between balancing coursework, finals, and the chilly weather, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. And while budgets are often tight, that doesn’t mean students can’t enjoy fun and meaningful activities during their time off.

Taking part in simple, affordable activities can do wonders for mental health and stress relief. Whether connecting with friends, exploring new hobbies, or simply finding ways to unwind, these moments can help students recharge and embrace the holiday season with a refreshed mindset.

Winter in Rexburg

Winter in Rexburg is nothing short of an adventure. Known for its frigid temperatures and snowy landscapes, Rexburg transforms into a winter wonderland each year. Temperatures often hover around 20°F (-6°C) during the day and can dip below 0°F (-18°C) at night. The snowfall can sometimes be frequent and heavy, but it varies in severity from year to year. With the city typically receiving several feet of snow throughout the season, warm coats, boots, and gloves are essential for everyone, whether you are accustomed to winter climates or not.

Despite the cold, life on and around the BYU-Idaho campus stays lively. Many students find creative ways to enjoy the winter, from sledding on nearby hills to starting snowball fights and building snowmen. There’s also a sense of camaraderie among students as they brave the chilly weather together.

Indoor Activities

Movie marathon

Staying indoors and watching a holiday movie is one of the coziest ways to embrace the festive spirit. Whether you’re curled up under a blanket with hot cocoa or gathered around the TV with loved ones, holiday movies offer a perfect escape into the magic of the season. With hundreds of options, there’s a film to suit every mood and taste.

For a dose of holiday cheer, you can’t go wrong with beloved classics like The Santa Clause, The Polar Express, or The Grinch, each bringing a heartwarming take on the season. If you’re in the mood for something timeless, travel back to the golden age of cinema with nostalgic favorites like It’s a Wonderful Life or Miracle on 34th Street. These films capture the true essence of Christmas with their heartfelt stories.

Holiday comedies like Elf and Home Alone are guaranteed to deliver humor while still offering heartwarming moments of family and togetherness. You can also explore newer releases or animated specials for a fresh take on holiday classics.

Cooking contest

Getting together with friends for a night of cooking and fun is the perfect way to take a break from studying and escape the cold. Choose a festive theme—like holiday cookies, a hot cocoa bar, or comfort food favorites like soups and casseroles—and have everyone bring ingredients to share. It’s budget-friendly and brings everyone together in the spirit of the season.

While the food is cooking, clean up the kitchen together, share stories, and play music to set the mood. For added fun, turn the evening into a friendly cooking competition or host a potluck-style event where everyone brings a signature dish.

Attend a play in the Snow building on campus

Participating in campus activities is a great way to get out of the house while staying warm. Support fellow students by opting to see one of the productions put on by the university. Choose from dance performances, student recitals, drama productions, and more. Stay up-to-date on what is happening by visiting the BYU-I website

Outdoor Activities

Country dancing

Country dancing is a local favorite among students and a fantastic way to meet new people. One of the most popular spots for dancing is Roots and Boots, where the energy is high and the fun is nonstop.

The event happens every week on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. From 8–9 p.m., there’s a beginner-friendly dance instruction session to help you learn the steps. Then, from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m., the real dancing begins, with lively music and a welcoming crowd.

It’s held in a partially outdoor covered storage facility, which adds to the rustic charm but can get chilly in winter. Be sure to bundle up with a coat to stay comfortable while dancing the night away.

The BYU Idaho campus also holds country dancing every Wednesday evening from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the student center.

Hot Springs

If you want to venture outside of Rexburg for a bit of adventure, you could visit local hot springs. Eastern Idaho is dotted with hot springs due to past volcanic activity surrounding natural fault lines in the earth's crust. With hot springs averaging between 100°F and 108°F (37°C and 42°C), this can be a great winter activity despite being outdoors. Some places to visit include:

  • Heise Hot Springs (20 minutes from Rexburg - 19 miles)

  • Pincock Hot Springs (30 minutes from Rexburg - 27 miles)

  • Lava Hot Springs (1.5 hours from Rexburg - 115 miles)

  • Downetta Hot Springs (2 hours from Rexburg - 120 miles)

Sledding/tubing/bonfire at St. Anthony Sand Dunes

Brave the cold and get outside! So many activities can create lasting memories during the winter months. While being outdoors may be uncomfortable during the winter, especially if you are from a warmer climate, many activities can only be enjoyed in the cold weather.

Sledding or tubing on the St. Anthony Sand Dunes is a great experience. Equip yourself with some low-cost sleds or tubes and enjoy sledding down the giant dunes at high speeds. Warm up with a bonfire afterward at the fire pits available for public use.

Sunday night stadium singing

BYU-Idaho students gather under the stadium bleachers every Sunday evening to sing together. The beautiful acoustics make it an unforgettable experience where you can enjoy the music's beauty and meet new people. Songs are sung in both English and Spanish to accommodate some of the international students.

Spanish singing starts at 8:45 p.m., and English begins at 9:30 p.m.
